Every drop of Asian Herbal Tea carries a nostalgic stream of memories from the author’s childhood summers, when the heat seemed endless. In her grandmother’s small kitchen, still steeped in the smell of wood smoke, a cup of herbal tea made from roasted Litsea Cubeba, ginger, lime, and garlic comes vividly back to life:
“The tea was bitter, spicy, slightly astringent, and intensely aromatic as it rose to the back of the throat. Steam billowed from the cup, radiating heat, before slowly unfolding into something deeper: warmth seeping into the chest, a tenderness that soothed both body and soul. Within that cup of tea was love, and there was healing…”
From this hazy fragment of memory, a full-bodied, warm Asian tea was brought back to life, with a gentle veil of smoke. It is not the light, abstract interpretation of green tea often found in Western perfumery, but a fragrance rooted in the everyday rituals of Asian life where herbs are not merely ingredients to drink or medicinal materials, but emotional anchors and expressions of tender care passed down through generations.
The work was proudly recognized in the Selected Perfume category, under the Litsea Cubeba theme, at The Sense of the Local 2025, an international perfumery competition held in Thailand.
More than a conventional commercial fragrance creation, this work marked a proud step forward bringing a distinctly Vietnamese voice in olfactory art to the regional stage at Chiang Mai Design Week 2025, and connecting with an international audience.
Asian Herbal Tea successfully passed a rigorous selection process to be recognized as a Selected Perfume, a featured work within The Sense of the Local 2025 an international creative project centered on fragrance.
The project was co-organized by leading Thai creative and professional organizations, including the Thailand Creative & Design Center (TCDC Chiang Mai), the Thai Perfumers Association, and the Creative Economy Agency (CEA). At its core, the project aimed to elevate the value of local resources by transforming distinctive regional raw materials into high-level artistic creations through the lens of the Creative Economy.
This recognition from fragrance professionals in Thailand reflects the meaningful intersection of personal experience, East Asian cultural heritage, and contemporary perfumery craftsmanship a direction that both I and my partner brand, Doucé Perfume, have continued to pursue.
The exhibition, themed "Make Scents, Make Sense" as part of Chiang Mai Design Week 2025, became an important platform for Doucé Perfume to present Asian Herbal Tea to an international audience. It marked a significant milestone for the brand Doucé’s first step onto the international stage.
For its first participation in a major international exhibition, Doucé brought with it a contemporary Asian aesthetic and a body of olfactory creations shaped by experience, craftsmanship, and meticulous attention to detail.
At the exhibition, Doucé had the opportunity to stand alongside international fragrance creators and take part in deeper conversations around culture, local materials, and emerging directions in contemporary fragrance. The event was more than a milestone for the brand; it was an opportunity for Doucé to tell a story of fragrance from the perspective of a Vietnamese creator on a larger stage - a space where local identity could meet, interact, and resonate with the broader design landscape of the region.
